Description
A rare low-seated bergère with a wraparound backrest, made of mahogany and mahogany veneer, decorated with inlaid rosettes, quatrefoils and stylised palmettes in ebony and pewter. The backrest is flanked by ram’s heads, whilst the armrests rest on three lotus-shaped legs finely carved with palmettes and volutes. Attributed to François-Honoré-Georges and Georges Jacob (1803–1813). Consulate/Empire period. 94 × 66 × 60 cm. (Minor repairs; cushion missing) This rare example of a bergère combines decorative elements associated with the Consulate style, such as the ram’s heads, as illustrated by a bergère held in the Mobilier National collection, made according to drawings by Le Queu for the furnishings of the Hôtel de Montholon, as well as elements associated with the Empire style, such as the lotus-shaped legs and the chair’s particularly solid and architecturally designed structure. The use of pewter and ebony against a mahogany background is reminiscent of the work of certain cabinetmakers during the Consulate and the Empire, such as Pierre-Etienne Levasseur or the Jacob brothers. Notable examples include the famous furniture preserved at the Fondation Napoléon (a drop-leaf writing desk and a matching chest of drawers with doors) crafted by Pierre-Etienne Levasseur.
