Description
Based on an ancient model. A pair of bronze sculptures with a dark patina. ‘The Furietti Centaurs’. They are mounted on pink granite plinths adorned with a moulded base featuring a frieze of water leaves and a beaded frieze. 19th century. Height: 47 cm Total height: 66 cm This pair of bronze sculptures is a reduced-scale version of the Furietti Centaurs from the Roman period, originally carved in grey-black marble (bigio morato), now housed in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. They were discovered in 1736 by the Cardinal and antiquarian Giuseppe Furietti (1685–1764). Numerous smaller versions were produced during the 18th and 19th centuries; they were notably brought back from the Grand Tour. Italian (Rome, Naples) and later French foundries produced them in various sizes, in bronze with a brown or black patina to imitate the dark hue of the original marble.
