INDIA – Pala period, 10th–11th century Grey sandstone stele, depicting a crowned bodhisattva seated on a lotus resting upon a throne adorned with two gazelles flanking a wheel, his hands performing the dharma chakra pravartana mudra (the gesture of setting the Wheel of the Law in motion), set against an arch resting on small columns and adorned with hamsa birds whose tails transform into plant scrollwork. Dimensions (excluding the plinth): 29 x 26 x 7 cm (damage and losses). Reference: A similar stele is held at the Patna Museum, Bihar, no. 21553
