Description
ERINNOPHILIA / PHILATELY – “GRANDE SEMAINE de TOURS” – THREE LETTERS SENT ABROAD: - Letter on letterhead from “Octave LECOURT Wholesale Grocers, sole distributor of La Boucle soap and ‘écureuil’ products” – franked with a 25c blue ‘semeuse’ cameo stamp, date stamp 24 February 1925 - ON THE FRONT: postal propaganda stamp for the Grande Semaine, 8–16 May 1926 (perforated 50 x 35 mm) featuring the cathedral, St Martin’s and the clock tower, designed by the illustrator Y. TOTIN, Gibert Clarey, printer. - Letter on MIRAULT FRERES letterhead with an advertisement on the reverse for “Rivoire et Carret vermicelli” – 40c bronze “sower” cameo stamp, postmark 15 April 1927 - ALSO ON THE BACK: a promotional sticker for the ‘Grande Semaine de Tours’ (7–15 May 1927) – a general view of Tours, the cathedral and the Wilson Bridge, designed by the illustrator Suzanne BRUCH, printed by GIBERT & CLAREY. - Header by Octave LECOURT (different from 1925). Postage: 40c blue ‘sow’ camee stamp, postmark 16 February 1929 - ON THE BACK: a sticker for the ‘Grande Semaine’ from 9 to 20 May 1929. Same design as 1927, with different colours. Note: these promotional postage labels were used to publicise events (or promote ideas, appeal for donations, etc.) free of charge. In particular, they were distributed by the organising body to fair exhibitors to encourage the recipients of their letters to attend the fairs. Initially, they were affixed to the front of the envelope next to the stamp, but the postal authorities quickly banned these labels as they bore too close a resemblance to stamps and misled postmen, who risked confusing them with the stamp. – Senders were therefore obliged to stick them on the back.
