FRANCE 1938 – INAUGURATION of the AMERICAN MEMORIAL at POINTE de GRAVE – LAFAYETTE 1777 / PERSHING 1917 ( * ) - Complete collection of TEN NEW COMMEMORATIVE POSTAL ENTIERS, each in its own printed protective sleeve, Yvert TS 12 + TS 13. - 5 postcards with a 55c stamp, printed in blue on the card and depicting Lafayette’s departure aboard the three-masted ship ‘La Victoire’ on 26 March 1777. On the reverse, 5 different illustrations of the monument and its surroundings. - - 5 illustrated postcards with a 1 F stamp printed in red on the card. ( * ) At Pointe de Grave, Le Verdon-sur-Mer / Gironde, there stood an imposing monument to the Americans, also known as the LAFAYETTE MEMORIAL, 75 metres high. The foundation stone was laid on 6 September 1919 by President Raymond Poincaré. The monument was officially unveiled on 4 September 1938. The inscription on the monument read: “To the glory of the Americans, to the soldiers of General Pershong, defenders of the same ideals of justice and liberty that led Lafayette’s volunteers to America.” The Nazis blew up the monument on 30 May 1942.
