ROMANS, Isère (26) – HISTORICAL STAMP COLLECTION from the First World War. An exceptional collection chronicling the postal history of the GERMAN PRISONERS OF WAR CAMP at ROMANS ( * ) - A collection that is particularly remarkable for its coherence and the great rarity of certain documents, postmarks and stamps issued by various administrative authorities. Correspondence bearing multiple stamps, illustrating – through postal routes and administrative stamps – the various assignments following requisitioning (mines, construction sites, etc.), censorship, transit for labour requisitioning, hospital transfers, etc. This collection, organised chronologically, therefore provides a precise account of the destinations and employment of the German prisoners interned at the centre: 102 different POSTAL DOCUMENTS. The collection is supplied with its descriptive expert’s inventory, in which each letter is described. - A rare and unique collection, the result of a lifetime of research. ( * ) – A transit and detention camp operating from 1914 until 1918, mainly housed within the La Presle barracks, to accommodate German soldiers taken prisoner at the front. Under the labour requisition laws, designed to address the shortage of men mobilised at the front, this camp became the central hub in the Rhône region for deploying prisoners to agricultural and industrial work, as well as construction sites… This camp was placed under the control of the Red Cross, which carried out humanitarian visits to inspect the accommodation facilities, particularly those for convalescents.
