Description
19th-century Italian school, Mater dolorosa, oil on original canvas, set within an oval opening in a rectangular frame of gilded wood and stucco with foliage decoration (dimensions excluding frame 65.5 x 54 cm, including frame 80 x 65.5 cm – craquelure and minor losses of paint, damage to the stucco and wear to the gilding, as is) This Virgin of Sorrows is an interesting example of Guercino’s (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as il Guercino, 1591–1666) original composition, which has since disappeared and of which all trace has been lost since the mid-19th century. Guercino’s original was held in Parma as part of the prestigious Dalla Rosa-Prati collection. It appears in the inventory of works that the marquises wished to transfer to the Pinacoteca di Parma, a list drawn up in 1843 and signed by Paolo Toschi (M. Giusto, L. Fornari Schianchi, Galleria Nazionale di Parma. Catalogo delle opere. Il Settecento, Milan, 2000). Documented by an engraving by Angelo Rossena, printed in 1836 by the Calcografia Toschi (Biblioteca Palatina, Fondo Parmense, no. 1864), this composition enjoyed a certain degree of renown and was widely reproduced throughout the 19th century.
