Description
A rare and exceptional multi-part ciborium in vermeil, decorated with Limousin enamels, semi-precious stone cabochons and pearls; the chalice is adorned with enamel medallions depicting portraits of Saint Charles Borromeo, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, Saint Andrew and Saint Catherine of Alexandria; the foot is decorated at the base with fantastical animals in high relief; the pedestal is adorned with a frieze of Limoges enamel depicting scenes from the life of Jesus: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Last Supper and the Deposition. A very fine piece from the late 19th century. H: 31.5 cm, D: 15.5 cm (pedestal), Minerva hallmark, crafted by Charles-Frédéric Berger and Henri Nesme, Lyon-based silversmiths specialising in religious silverwork. Weight: approx. 1,100 g gross.
Missing cabochons; the gold pin and pearls adorning the base have probably been replaced.
