Description
Edouard Auguste NOUSVEAUX (1811–1867) Attack on and burning of Cascar (70 leagues upstream from St Louis, Senegal) by Senegalese troops and sailors from the Station under the command of Mr E. Bouët, Governor of Senegal and its dependencies, August 1843. Watercolour and gouache on paper, signed lower right, dated 1844, 38 x 55 cm (image size). Having embarked aboard the ship commanded by Bouët-Willaumez (the future admiral, who explored the River Senegal and the Gulf of Guinea), the artist travelled along the coasts of Africa, and more specifically Senegal, during the reign of Louis-Philippe. Several works relating to these explorations are, moreover, illustrated by Nousveaux. Several of his works are held in various French museums: a portrait of the Belle Poule at the Musée de la Marine, a view of Senegal and *Signare et serviteurs à Gorée* at the Quai Branly, *The Prince of Joinville Travelling to Brazil* at the Trianon, various views of Senegal at Chantilly and La Rochelle, etc.
