The Spinario or thorn puller is one of Rome's most famous antiques and one of the most admired and copied of the Renaissance. Pope Sixtus IV had it transferred from the Lateran Palace to the Capitoline Palace in 1471. In 1540, Cardinal Hippolythe d'Este, then Archbishop of Lyon, presented a bronze copy to Francis I. Part of Napoleon Bonaparte's spoils of war, it was exhibited in the Louvre in Paris from 1798 to 1815. Today, it is housed in the Hall of Triumphs in the Palazzo dei Conservatori of the Capitoline Museum in Rome, and its appeal has never waned, as evidenced by the many replicas that have been produced over the centuries.
