Description
ZULU, SOUTH AFRICA. Circular headdress known as an ‘Isicholo’, made from fibres dyed red ochre. 20th-century piece. Ø 30 cm (approx.). Signs of wear, use and scuffing. Mounted on a wrought-iron frame.
The husband presents an isicholo to his wife, who has sacrificed her hair for it. This wide-brimmed hat is worn like a beret, tilted back over the nape of the neck, thereby affirming the wife’s marital status and her social standing within the community.
