Description
CHINA, in the Northern Wei style, Yungang style
Elegant carved stone head of Guanyin. The deity depicted has a face with elongated features, half-closed almond-shaped eyes surmounted by a thin arch of the eyebrows, a mouth with thin lips showing a slight smile, and stretched earlobes adorned with earrings that drop down in pearl pendants. The head is encircled by a large headdress featuring an image of Buddha and floral motifs.
This model of a deity's head echoes the stylistic characteristics of the monumental sculptures in the Yungang caves, created during the Northern Wei dynasty at the end of the 5th century AD. Located near Datong in northern China, the Yungang complex is one of the most important groups of Buddhist cave sculptures in ancient China.
