Description
JAPAN, Edo period Rare lacquered wood "kura" horse saddle. The saddle is arched, with strongly curved pommels, entirely decorated in gold lacquer on a brown background and nashiji on the upper part. The sides are decorated with an elegant continuous pattern of cranes with outstretched wings moving among a series of hexagonal honeycombed reserves containing four-lobed flower motifs. The decoration combines hira maki-e and taka maki-e in gold powder, with the upper part featuring nashiji decoration, while the reverse bears an inscription engraved in the wood:
"延璤二月九".
