Portrait of Louis XIV, King of France (1638 – 1715), as a commander-in-chief.
He is depicted in profile, in armour, wearing the purple mantle of the Roman Imperator, his right hand holding the sceptre, his left hand resting on the royal crown adorned with fleurs-de-lis and an eagle’s head.
In the background on the left is the royal tent in the military camp; in the top right, a landscape surmounted by a fortified town.
Oil on canvas. Mounted on an oak panel. On the reverse, two horizontal reinforcing struts (Lacunae, damage and restorations)

A reworking, with variations in the positioning of the arms and hands, of the portrait of Louis XIV by Pierre Mignard, known from the version in the Musée du Château de Versailles (MV 6803) and that in the Château de Chantilly (cf. Claire Constans, Musée National du Château de Versailles, Les Peintures. Volume II, p. 649 – RMN1995).
