David defeating Goliath
A significant bronze cast with a nuanced brown patina, depicting the young David with one foot resting on Goliath’s severed head, holding his sword as he prepares to sheathe it.
Signed ‘A. MERCIÉ’ on the pedestal.
An early cast by Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE.
Bears the mark ‘F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR PARIS’ as well as the stamp ‘RÉDUCTION MÉCANIQUE A. COLLAS BREVETÉ’.
Circular base richly decorated with interlaced friezes and Neo-Renaissance motifs.
Model created around 1869–1870, then produced in various sizes by the Barbedienne foundry from the 1870s onwards.
H. 92 cm
In very good overall condition. Slight wear and marks on the patina.
Related work:
David’s original model was executed by Antonin Mercié in Rome in the late 1860s. A monumental bronze version, commissioned by the State in 1872, is held at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
