Description
CURMER (L) The Holy Gospels for Sundays and Feast Days throughout the Year. Paris, L. Curmer, 1864. 3 vols. in-4, bound in full red morocco, the covers framed by a quadruple gilt border followed by a broad frame of foliage bordered by two double gilt borders, the outer double fillet flanked by fleurons, the whole framing a central panel with a geometric design, silk endpapers, all edges gilt. Slipcases.
Nearly 200 plates, all in chromolithography.
One of the masterpieces of 19th-century French illustrated books. In producing the volumes of the Gospels, Curmer gathered and reproduced the very finest of Western Europe’s illuminated manuscripts, scouring the libraries of England, Italy, Germany and France, with the exception of the Imperial Library in Paris, which appears to have refused him permission to reproduce them. The third volume recounts the life of the Virgin Mary and brings together the explanatory notes on the plates with details of the manuscripts’ origins.
Morocco leather binding, of remarkable quality.
A very fine copy, perfect in every respect.
