Folio volume of 274 folios: (4) unnumbered folios (Life of St Jerome), a10 b-m8 n-o6 p-r8 s6 t8 u6 x8 y-z6 &6 ?6 R6 A-N6. Brown calfskin on wooden boards, cold-stamped, traces of leather ties, decorated ribbed spine (ext. bds.). Italian first edition of the Letters of St Jerome, translated by Matteo da Ferrara. A superb and unique incunabulum edition, it is lavishly illustrated with 5 large full-page woodcuts, arranged in 2 large repeated frames, and 188 small line engravings used here for the first time. Text in round script, in two columns, punctuated with ornamental initials. Ancient handwritten bookplate on the title page: Fontanini. Modern bookplate by Luigi Sandra Morandi. A fine copy. Skilful restoration to a few leaves (some of which have been re-margined); endpapers replaced. Small wormholes in the binding; split joints. SB
