MANUSCRIPT. — PERU. — TUPAC AMARU (José Gabriel Condor Canqui). Letter signed Thupa Amaru Inga, to the corregidor Don Antonio de Arriaga, dated ‘Tinta, 22 December 1779’, 3 folio pages (ff. 20–21). — With 8 letters and official reports signed by Don Antonio de Arriaga (30 pp.), 1779–1780. Folio, worn modern cardboard binding. An exceptional document concerning the first indigenous revolt against Spanish rule since the 16th century, marking the first step towards South American independence. The ‘last of the Incas’, chieftain of the towns of Pampamarca, Tungasuca and Surimana in the province of Tinta (Peru), Tupac Amaru (1742–1781), rebelled against the Spaniards and was executed, along with his entire family, in Cuzco. In his letter, he requests permission to build mills for the indigenous people in his region and protests against the objections of Don Domingo de Unda, who, he says, fears competition for his own mills and is motivated solely by greed, with no regard for the public good. Domingo de Unda wishes to force the Indigenous people to travel to his own mills, which are two leagues away. These journeys result in a huge waste of time and are justified only by laughable arguments. Tupac Amaru’s signature has been cut out [presumably as a precaution, as the Spaniards had erased all traces of the uprising], and the fragment bearing the signature has been reattached. The collection also contains eight letters and reports from the colonial governor Don Antonio de Arriaga (1727–1780); in the final letter, Arriaga vigorously supports Tupac Amaru’s demands, which contradicts his reputation as a narrow-minded coloniser.
