Description
[AUTOGRAPH]. BERGSON (Henri). AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ‘H. Bergson’ addressed to Henri DELACROIX. Vevey, 20 July 1934. Two handwritten pages on a double sheet (18 × 11 cm), with an autograph envelope, stamped and postmarked, addressed to ‘Monsieur Henri Delacroix, Dean of the Faculty of Arts’, forwarded to the Hôtel des Bains, in Aix-les-Bains. Horizontal fold. A BEAUTIFUL PHILOSOPHICAL LETTER ON MEMORY AND THE NATURE OF INTELLIGENCE. Bergson thanks his correspondent for sending him *Les Grandes Formes de la vie mentale*, a work published by Félix Alcan in 1934. He explains that his move to the countryside, ‘which is always rather a struggle for me’, delayed his reading of it, and then expresses his admiration: ‘The book is of the utmost interest. On each of the subjects you study, it offers a perspective that is uniquely your own, yet remains remarkably comprehensive, with nothing of significance being omitted. ’ He particularly highlights two subjects at the heart of his own research: ‘I was particularly struck by your chapter on memory, and also by your conception (which could give rise to such interesting discussions) of the nature of intelligence.’ He concludes with his compliments and a friendly farewell. The recipient, Henri DELACROIX (1873–1937), a philosopher and psychologist, was at that time Dean of the Faculty of Arts in Paris. This letter bears witness to the attention Bergson paid to his colleague’s work, combining praise with an invitation to philosophical discussion.
