Description
[AUTOGRAPH]. LOTI (Pierre, pseudonym of Julien Viaud). AUTOGRAPH CARD SIGNED ‘Pierre Loti’, TO LOUIS BERTRAND, PROBABLY REGARDING *Le Sens de l’Ennemi*. [Paris, probably 1917, based on the partially legible postmark]. One page handwritten in ink on a black-bordered card (165 × 97 mm), with a matching autograph envelope, stamped and postmarked, addressed to Louis Bertrand c/o the Arthème Fayard bookshop, then forwarded to Chemin des Collinettes. Handwritten sender’s address on the reverse: ‘183 rue de l’Université, Paris VIIe’. PIERRE LOTI’S STRONG PROTEST AGAINST LOUIS BERTRAND’S REMARKS ON ISLAM. Whilst acknowledging his colleague’s talent, Loti addresses this curt rebuke to him: “I would like to believe, sir, that you would not have sent me your book – which, incidentally, is full of talent – had you considered the indignation and revulsion that the section you devote to Islam would cause me. ” He concludes with the formal phrase “Yours faithfully”, followed by his signature. The work in question is likely *Le Sens de l’ennemi*, published by Arthème Fayard in 1917, which includes a section devoted to Islam. A PARTICULARLY TELLING DOCUMENT ON THE DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO WRITERS REGARDING THEIR PORTRAYAL OF ISLAM, the very brevity of which accentuates the force of the polemic.
