Description
[AUTOGRAPH]. SAND (George). AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED ‘G. SAND’. Nohant, 29 August [1869]. One page handwritten in brown ink on a sheet (20.5 × 13.5 cm) bearing the embossed initials ‘GS’. Slight creases; minor damage to the lower right-hand corner. A CHARMING AUTOGRAPH NOTE BY GEORGE SAND (1804–1876), addressed to close correspondents whom she affectionately calls ‘My dear children’, probably the painter Eugène Lambert and his wife [In a letter to Flaubert written between 2 and 4 September 1869, George Sand explains that she is cancelling her trip to Normandy because the Lamberts, whom she had intended to visit in Yport, are returning to Paris]. The writer enquires about her correspondents’ forthcoming stay in Yport – “the whole of September?” – on the Normandy coast, and plans to visit them: “I shall come and give you a kiss there; just a word in reply! ” She then mentions various domestic concerns (“I shall look after the cow myself with [Amédée] Despruneaux, and a pony [etc.]”, before concluding affectionately: “I kiss you a thousand times”. A fine example of George Sand’s intimate and informal correspondence, bearing witness to her affection for her loved ones and the spontaneity of her letter-writing.
