Description
VILLETTE (Claude). THE REASONS FOR THE RITES AND CEREMONIES PERFORMED IN THE CATHOLIC, APOSTOLIC AND ROMAN CHURCH. Together with the Reasons for the Ceremonies of the Coronation of our Kings of France, and the twelve Unique Marks of their Celestial Kingship, above all the kings of the world. Paris, Guillaume Des Ruës, 1611 [in the colophon: François Jacquin, 1611]. In-quarto, marbled brown calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt scrolls and fleurons, speckled edges (17th-century binding); (2) preliminary folios [out of 3], 1076 pp. [the last page incorrectly numbered ‘1074’], (18) folios. Headbands damaged with losses, a slight tear beginning at the joints but the stitching is very sound; corner loss to the title leaf, partly lined, water stains and soiling on the title page, small hole at the top of the title leaf with loss of one letter, inner margin of the first two leaves reinforced. MISSING: the first dedication leaf, corresponding to the second preliminary leaf. FIRST EDITION of this treatise by Claude Villette, canon of Saint-Marcel in Paris, devoted to the EXPLANATION OF THE OFFICES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, as well as to the rites of coronation and the sacred nature of the French monarchy. Title printed in red and black; wood-engraved typeface, headpieces, initials and tailpieces; numerous decorative borders. An old handwritten inscription, now crossed out, on the title page and a blue stamp reading ‘Ex-libris Y. Le Petit’ on the first endpaper. The spine bears the title ‘Epistres de Sales’, which is unrelated to the work, suggesting it may have been rebound, although the binding is very well executed.
