Description
PLUTARCH. PLUTARCH’S LIVES OF ILLUSTRIOUS MEN, translated from the Greek by Dominique Ricard, with Notes at the end of each Life. Paris, P. Théophile Barrois, Year VII–Year XI [1798–1803]. 13 volumes. [Included in:] PLUTARCH’S MORAL WORKS, translated into French by the Reverend Ricard. Paris, Veuve Desaint and P. Théophile Barrois, 1783–1795. 17 volumes. A set of 30 volumes in 12mo, glazed fawn calfskin, with triple gilt fillet framing on the covers and fleurons at the corners, plain spine decorated with scrolls and small gilded oval irons, title and volume number labels in black morocco, edges speckled with blue (contemporary binding). Some minor scuffing, title and volume number labels bleached by poor-quality wax, a small loss to one volume number label. FIRST EDITION of the two major translations of Plutarch by Dominique RICARD (1741–1803), brought together in a complete 30-volume set. The first series, comprising 13 volumes, contains the ‘Parallel Lives’, devoted to the great men of Greece and Rome, notably Alexander, Caesar, Pericles, Alcibiades, Cicero, Demosthenes, Cato and Brutus. The translation is enriched with historical and critical notes placed at the end of each life. The second series, comprising 17 volumes, brings together the ‘Moral Works’, a vast collection of philosophical, political, religious and literary treatises and short works, devoted in particular to education, virtue, friendship, the passions, human conduct and life in ancient societies. A BEAUTIFUL SET IN UNIFORM CONTEMPORARY BINDING, a condition highly sought after for these two series. ¶ Brunet, IV-740: ‘A translation essential for those who do not care for Amyot’s Old French.’
