Description
[GILDED]. ÉNAULT (Louis) LONDON. Paris, Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1876. Large folio, in the publisher’s green half-chagrin binding, smooth spine richly decorated with gilt designs, covers in green chagrin-patterned percaline adorned with a large embossed and gilt design depicting the coat of arms and motto of the City of London within an architectural and floral frame, gilt edges (Bound by the publisher Engel, with plates by Souze). Some scuffing and discolouration to the binding with loss of gilding, particularly on the head and foot and at the corners; very scattered foxing, more pronounced on certain leaves. FIRST FRENCH EDITION AND FIRST PRINTING OF ONE OF GUSTAVE DORÉ’S MASTERPIECES. It is illustrated with 174 woodcuts after Gustave DORÉ, including 52 full-page compositions, offering a striking panorama of the British capital during the Victorian era. A copy preserved in its beautiful, decorated publisher’s green cardboard binding, rarer than the more common red publisher’s binding. ¶ Leblanc, 107 – Carteret, III, 220 – Vicaire, III, 574.
