Six and a half volumes in marbled fawn sheepskin with corner pieces, ribbed spines, title and volume number labels in bronze-green morocco, edges speckled in red and black (contemporary binding). Minor losses to the upper cap of vol. 2; slight leather wear on the upper cap of vol. 5; the upper cap of vol. 6 is worn down with a loss of leather; covers rubbed; 1 loose leaf (pp. 509/510 of vol. 5). FIRST EDITION IN IN-QUARTO FORMAT, the finest edition of this work. It is illustrated with a PORTRAIT etched by Ravenet after Coypel, a headband bearing the coat of arms of the Duke of Chartres, and 29 headpieces engraved in intaglio by Le Bas.
