BECKFORD (William). VATHEK. London, Clarke, Mount Street, [1815]. Large 8vo (binding: 240 × 155 mm) in Empire green Russian leather, covers decorated with a frame of two gilt fillets with gilt volutes at the corners, spine with broad flat raised bands decorated with a gilt scroll, gilt title, gilt filleted edges, inner border decorated with a triple gilt fillet, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Heavy foxing on the frontispiece, the title page and the final blank leaf; very scattered throughout the rest of the volume; a slight knock mark on the front cover; leather on the back cover has been re-glued. THIRD EDITION IN FRENCH, known as the ‘definitive’ edition, the latest to have been corrected and expanded with a note by the author, of this MASTERPIECE of BRITISH GOTHIC LITERATURE. It contains an aquatint-engraved FRONTISPICE on China paper, mounted by Isaac Taylor after a drawing by Isaac Taylor Jr., and the famous title VIGNETTE depicting Vathek’s radiant eye surmounted by a turban. A copy printed on fine vellum paper, watermarked ‘1814’, with generous margins, in a decorated binding of the period.
