MALTE-BRUN. UNIVERSAL GEOGRAPHY + COMPLETE ATLAS OF THE COMPENDIUM OF UNIVERSAL GEOGRAPHY. P., Furne et Cie, 1858–60 – Aimé André, Veuve Le Normant, 1837 [for the atlas]. Six volumes, large 8½, in ivy-green shagreen, spines with gold-threaded raised bands, gilt title, marbled edges + folio atlas in ivy-green half-calf, smooth spine decorated lengthwise with rocaille metalwork (contemporary binding). The atlas’s joints are scuffed with some skin flaking; a few stains on the atlas’s binding. NEW EDITION, entirely revised. It contains numerous PLATES OF VIEWS engraved out-of-size in intaglio on heavy vellum. This copy is enhanced by the BEAUTIFUL ATLAS from the 1837 edition, fully revised and corrected by J.-J.-N. Huot. It comprises 72 MAPS (including 14 double-page maps) with outlines highlighted in watercolour; some are partially or even entirely painted in watercolour. From the library of ‘Château d’Ancy-le-Franc’ [for the atlas], bearing a heraldic bookplate, and subsequently from the ‘Hornus’ library, bearing a modern bookplate. ¶ Sabin, 44159.
