Description
MAUGIN (Jean). THE FIRST BOOK OF THE NEW TRISTAN ROY OF LEON AND ISOLDE, QUEEN OF CORNWALL. Translated into French by Jean Maugin, known as ‘l’Angevin’. Paris, for Vincent Sertenas, 1552 [Paris, the Widow of Maurice de la Porte, 1554]. Folio, marbled fawn calfskin, spine ribbed in red morocco, entirely decorated with coats of arms and small gilded metal fittings, gilded scrolls at the head and tail, title label in garnet morocco, red edges (original binding); (1) title leaf, 358 pp. [title leaf, a–z6; aa–ff6; gg1–5]. A small loss to the upper cap, the lower cap levelled off, a slight tear at the top of the bands, small areas of leather wear on the covers, a few small losses of leather on the bands at the raised bands, 3 worn corners, soiling and losses in the margins of folio ‘a1’, which has been restored without affecting the text, a few faint water stains and small brown marginal spots, a more pronounced light brown water stain on pages 73 to 91, which then fades; more pronounced stains on pages 195 to 204; a hole (burn?) at the bottom of the quire on pages 41 to 48, which gradually diminishes and does not affect the text; a section of paper missing without affecting the text in the side margin of pages 141 to 144. MISSING: the original title page dated 1554; the 5 folios of the epistle, the ode to M. de Maupas, the table of contents and the privilege, and the leaf ‘gg6’, which contains on the front the notice to the reader, the errata and the ‘printed’ notice. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE CHIVALRY NOVEL, published in Paris by the Widow of Maurice de la Porte in 1554. This copy is MISSING the original title page, which has been replaced by another, modified historical title page, bound into the copy during the first half of the 18th century and bearing the title of the work, a different publisher’s address (the Parisian publisher Vincent Sertenas, who died in 1562) and a different publication date (1552) from the original, as well as a large woodcut in the centre (flowers in a pot); the publisher’s address and the date have clearly been altered. Also missing are the first five folios preceding the main text (epistle, ode to M. de Maupas, table of contents and licence) as well as the final folio ‘gg6’, which contains on the front the notice to the reader, the errata and the ‘printed’ notice. COPY belonging to Jean-Baptiste Denis GUYON DE SARDIÈRE (1674–1759) featuring a coat of arms in the compartments on the spine (a monogram consisting of two interlaced ‘G’s and two ‘S’s) and his AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE in the lower margin of the title page and on the final page (p. 358). A captain in the King’s regiment and son of the famous Mme de La Mothe-Guyon, this ARDENT BIBLIOPHILE purchased a large portion of Diane de Poitiers’s books in 1724. In 1759, the Duke of La Vallière won the auction for M. de Sardière’s book collection for 26,500 livres, a considerable sum at the time. Jean Maugin’s work does indeed appear under no. 853 in the auction catalogue, attributed to Vincent Sertenas and dated 1552, though with a few minor variations in the title. A CHARMING AND CURIOUS COPY, UNIQUE, featuring this ‘amended’ title page (probably at the request of Guyon de Sardière), with fine provenance, in a first-half-18th-century binding with a red morocco spine bearing a coat of arms. The text itself is complete. ¶ USTC, 27446, for the 1554 edition (15 copies listed, including 7 in France) - Brunet, V-956, which identifies the 1554 edition as the earliest - French Vernacular Books, 49894 - La Vallière, Vol. II-4018, for the 1554 edition – Guigard, “Nouvel armorial du Bibliophile”, II-251 – Catalogue of books from the library of the late Mr J.
