Description
[AUTOGRAPH]. BENJAMIN-CONSTANT (Jean-Joseph Benjamin, known as). AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED ‘Benj. Constant’ addressed to ‘Dear Mr [STREITBERG?]’, possibly WILLIAM STESTBERG. Paris, 27 rue Pigalle, 18 May [‘1897’ according to the postmark on the envelope]. One page handwritten in ink on a sheet (172 × 105 mm) edged in black, with a matching autograph envelope, stamped and postmarked, addressed to the recipient at ‘7, place Pereire’. Horizontal fold. AN INTERESTING NOTE ON THE VALUE OF HIS PAINTING AND THE UNCERTAINTIES OF THE ART MARKET. The Orientalist painter Benjamin-Constant (1845–1902) is delighted that his painting has remained in the possession of his correspondent: ‘I am glad that my “Envoi de Serbie” has remained in your possession; it was worth more! And may perhaps be worth a little more in the future! But the market value of the painting is so unpredictable that one cannot be certain of anything! ’ He concludes with the phrase ‘With my best regards’, followed by his signature. The work in question could be linked to ‘A Dispatch from Serbia’ (1876), now held at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the provenance of which is documented as belonging to a certain William STESTBERG.
