VIGNIER (Nicolas). THE THEATRE OF THE ANTICHRIST: A Reply to Cardinal Bellarmine, the Sieur de Remond, Pererius, Ribera, Viegas, Sanderus and others who, in their writings, condemn the doctrine of the Reformed Churches on this subject. S.l.n.e. [Saumur, Th. Porteau], 1610. Small folio (288 × 202 mm), ivory-coloured vellum with visible stitching, plain, unmarked spine (contemporary binding); (15) folios, 692 pages, (7) folios of title pages and errata. Water stain at the bottom of the title page. FIRST EDITION of this VERY RARE ANTI-PAPIST PAMPHLET by Nicolas VIGNIER the Younger (1575–1645), pastor of the Reformed Protestant Church of France in Blois. It was composed at the request of the National Synod of La Rochelle and caused a scandal upon its publication. The king ordered its suppression.
