Description
MARLIAVE (François de). A BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION OF 27 COMPOSITIONS created for *Le Mariage de Loti*. [c. 1932]. 27 sheets of various sizes mounted onto various supports. Some traces of glue in the margins or adhesive residue on the mountings. ONE ORIGINAL SIGNED WATERCOLOUR (approx. 26.5 x 20 cm) depicting a bare-chested Polynesian woman, wearing a hat, at the water’s edge; 12 ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS (11 of which are signed); 7 WATERCOLOUR PRINTS and 7 black-and-white PRINTS, signed on the plate. Some compositions bear the artist’s handwritten inscription ‘Mariage de Loti’. François de MARLIAVE (Toulon, 1874 – Draguignan, 1953), a French painter, decorator and illustrator, exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from the early 20th century onwards. A travelling painter, he spent time in Indochina on several occasions; its landscapes and scenes of daily life provided inspiration for his work. His work as an illustrator led him, in particular, to create the illustrations for Pierre Loti’s *Mariage de Loti*, published by Henri Cyral in 1932.
