Three parts bound together in a sturdy folio volume (binding: 352 × 240 mm) in brown calfskin, with a gilt fleur-de-lis in the centre of the covers within a wide gilt fillet border, spined with raised bands decorated with gilt fleurons, title label in brown morocco, upper edge stained brown, side and lower edges gilt (contemporary binding); Part 1: (18) ff., 322/324 ff. [i.e. 325/327 ff.: 3 ff. numbered 31*, 31** and 31*** added, and ff. 33 and 34 are MISSING] - Part 2: (12) ff., 201 ff., (1) blank f. - Part 3: (10) ff., the last of which is blank, 255 ff., (13) ff. [the first and last pages are blank] - Signature: Part 1: ã4 ~e4 ~i4 A-Z6 [3 folios signed F*, F** and F*** added – folios F3 and F4 are MISSING] Aa-Zz6 AAa-HHh6 A4 B2 – Part 2: +8 A–Z6 Aa–Kk6 Ll4 (Ll4 blank) A4 – Part 3: ã4 ~e6 (~e6 blank) A–Z6 AA–TT6 VV4 (VV4 blank) a–b6 (b6 blank). Restored binding: modern clasps, spine and title label; an old fawn calfskin spine (18th century) has been reattached to the modern spine; leather missing from the edges. 16th-century edition, partly in its original form, revised by Denis SAUVAGE (1520–1587), the historiographer to Henry II. Shared between the two Parisian booksellers Guillaume Chaudière and Pierre L’Huillier, ‘this edition is the finest we have of these Chronicles’ (Brunet). Monstrelet’s chronicle, covering the period from 1400 to 1444, is followed by the ‘New Chronicles’, which extend to 1516. It is an IMPORTANT RECORD of fifteenth-century history, bridging the gap between the chronicles of Jean Froissard and those of Philippe de Commines. A COPIUS EXAMPLE with a fresh block, entirely written in brown ink, preserved in a restored period binding (the original covers have been retained). Pages 33 and 34 of Part 1 are MISSING. Early handwritten bookplates in brown ink on the first blank leaf ‘Je suis à Robineau’ and on the title page ‘JB. D. Lépicier’, followed by bookplates reading ‘Seymour Leslie’ and ‘Hornus ’. ¶ Adams, M1612 – Brunet, III-1832 – Picot, Rothschild Catalogue, II-2098 - Tchemerzine, IV-867, which mentions the addition of the three folios numbered 31* to 31*** in Part 1 - USTC, 11240, at the address of Jean Le Blanc at Pierre L’Huillier’s and [Guillaume Chaudière’s], who owns a copy with a collation identical to our own.
