The Stories of MARGUERITE, Queen of Navarre. Bern, Société Typographique, 1781. 3 volumes, in-8. Full red morocco, with a gilt coat of arms in the centre of the covers. Gilt fillets and ‘M’ monograms at the corners, decorated ribbed spine, (ALLÔ) A collection of short stories by Marguerite de Valois, Duchess of Alençon and Queen of Navarre (1492–1549). A work in which romantic themes are most highly prized: the adventures of cuckolded or unfaithful husbands, and of shrewd and passionate women, illustrated with numerous examples of fidelity or infidelity, of cunning or folly. This edition, edited by the Swiss writer J. Rodolphe de Sinner, is richly illustrated with a frontispiece by Dunker, engraved by Eichler, repeated in every volume, 73 figures by Freudeberg, engraved on heavy laid paper by Guttenberg, and 72 vignettes and 72 end-piece illustrations by Dunker, engraved by himself, Eichler, Pillet and Richter.
