Description
A remarkable memento of the horse show held on 5 November 1931; the ‘National Horse Show’ in the United States of America, in New York City, which belonged to General Christian de La Croix de Castries (1902–1991), commander of the entrenched camp at Dien Bien Phu during the Indochina War in 1954 and world champion in the high jump on horseback in 1933 (2.38 m). A solid silver cup crafted by the American silversmiths ‘Gorham’. It comprises a conical lid surmounted by a ‘pine cone’-shaped handle and decorated with acanthus leaves; the openwork bowl, into which a blue-tinted blown-glass bowl is set, is decorated with a frieze depicting an ancient chariot race, rings with floral motifs, garlands and geometric patterns. Between the main lid and the bowl is a silver-coloured, mesh-work metal cover. The base is engraved with several inscriptions: “National Horse Show – 1931 – presented by the Commodore Hotel” and “Hunter or Jumper over triple bars won by the 1931 Tenace-French Army Team”. The Commodore Hotel was situated in Manhattan, and its manager, John McEntee Bowman, was also the president of the ‘National Horse Show Association’. Included is an original photograph of General de Castries’s home, showing this magnificent cup resting on a chest of drawers. Height: 30 cm, diameter: 30.5 cm, total silver weight: 2.836 kilograms. Excellent condition.
