Description
[CARICATURE]. [HESS (David) – GILLRAY (James)]. THE REGENERATION OF THE NETHERLANDS. A mirror for all regenerated peoples. Venice, published by Giovanni Zatta di Antonio, 1799. Small folio (approx. 37 × 26.5 cm), half-ecru cloth, marbled paper covers (later binding); (1) title leaf, 20 leaves of text and 20 plates. Inner margin of the title leaf reinforced with tape; foxing, soiling and water stains, the latter more pronounced on the first four plates; generally speaking, the illustrations on the 20 plates remain intact. RARE FIRST ITALIAN EDITION of this SATIRE on the Batavian Revolution and the French occupation of the Netherlands, first published in London in 1796 under the title ‘Hollandia Regenerata’. Published anonymously, the work was conceived and drawn by the Swiss artist David Hess, a soldier in the Dutch army, who requested and secured permission from Humphries in London to have his project engraved and published. The 20 XYLOGRAPHIC PLATES, printed in sepia, are attributed to the great English caricaturist James GILLRAY (1757–1815), who was then at the height of his fame. Each plate is accompanied on the facing page by a text leaf containing an explanation in French and its translation into Italian. A GOOD COPY, complete with all its leaves, with good margins, in a simple temporary binding, probably made during the second half of the 19th century (covers rubbed, spine worn with losses).
