Small 8vo in pale calfskin, with triple gilt fillet framing the covers; ribbed spine decorated with gilt scrolls and fleurons; maroon morocco title label; gilt inner scroll; gilt edges (contemporary binding); portrait; XXIV-154-XIV pages. Slight rubbing to the joints and edges, scuffing and a few rare foxing spots. FIRST EDITION FROM THE PRESSES OF THE ROYAL PRINTING OFFICE, based, according to the colophon, on the original manuscript and on copies of the first editions corrected in the author’s own hand. PORTRAIT on the frontispiece, engraved by Pierre-Philippe Choffard after an enamel by Jean Petitot, added to only part of the print run.
