Description
MOLIÈRE (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known as). THE WORKS OF MOLIÈRE. New edition. Paris, Veuve David, 1768. 8 volumes in 16mo porphyry sheepskin, smooth spine divided into compartments and decorated with gilt fleurons, title and volume number labels in garnet morocco, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Bindings worn, caps worn down or damaged, corners blunt, scuffing and wear to the leather, a few small losses; the text blocks in generally good condition, except for a small instance of marginal worm damage in volume 3, but with virtually no damage to the text or the engravings. A CHARMING ILLUSTRATED EDITION, containing a FRONTISPICE, a PORTRAIT of the author and 31 out-of-text FIGURES engraved by Jan PUNT after François BOUCHER, in a fine print. Titles printed in red and black. The plates, highly sought-after in this edition, accompany Molière’s principal comedies. A GOOD COPY in a contemporary binding, complete with all the engravings. ¶ Cohen mentions only the 1741 edition in 4 vols., small 12mo, on which our edition is based for the illustrations.
