Description
[ARTS AND CRAFTS]. SECRETS CONCERNING THE ARTS AND CRAFTS; a useful work, not only for artists, but also for those who employ them; new edition, considerably expanded. By a Society of Artists. Paris, Bossange & Compagnie, 1791. Four substantial in-12 volumes in marbled brown sheepskin, spined with raised bands decorated with gilt panels and fleurons, title and volume number labels in morocco, red edges (contemporary binding). Bindings worn: 6 cap bands worn down, and corners blunted with losses, scuffing and leather wear on the covers; fore-edges and half-edges scuffed with losses; slight loss of leather, more pronounced on certain volumes. The text blocks are in good overall condition, despite very minor worm damage in volume 1 on pages 309 to 362, affecting a few letters but not hindering reading, and at the bottom of the quire—without affecting the text—on pages 327 to 385 of volume 3 and pages 409 to 635 of volume 2. An old handwritten bookplate on the title page of volumes 1 and 2. NEW EDITION, considerably expanded, of this IMPORTANT COLLECTION of recipes and technical processes intended for craftsmen and artists. The work brings together a considerable number of formulas relating in particular to engraving, metalworking and gilding, varnishes, putty and mortars, glass and precious stones, colours and painting, inks, moulding, dyes, as well as numerous chemical and craft processes. A GOOD COPY in its original binding, which, according to an old handwritten note, belonged to a ‘painter and glazier’.
