Description
GALLONIO (Antonio) – TEMPESTA (Antonio). A BOOK BY ANTONIO GALLONIO, A ROMAN PRIEST OF THE ORATORIO CONGREGATION, ON THE HOLY MARTYRS OF THE CRUSADES. With engravings on copper in Rome by Antonio Tempesta and other pamphlets on the same subject. Paris, [Claude Cramoisy or Frédéric Léonard], 1659. In-4, fawn calfskin, with gilt roulette framing on the covers, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fleurons, garnet morocco title label, red edges (contemporary binding). Caps torn off, inscriptions in black ink ‘No. 38’ and ‘100’ on the front cover. Handwritten bookplate in black ink: ‘J.[ohan] nis M. iel Aug.[usti] ni Delon, Tolosae [Toulouse], 1821’. COMPLETE SET OF 44 PLATES, with the engraved title page, from the Paris edition of Antonio Gallonio’s treatise on the TORMENTS of the early Christian martyrs, published on the initiative of Raphaël Trichet du Fresne. The work is illustrated with an engraved TITLE page bearing the coat of arms of Nicolas Fouquet, to whom the work is dedicated, and 44 PLATES engraved on copper by Antonio TEMPESTA, based on compositions by Giovanni de Guerra. The scenes depict the various instruments and methods of torture: crucifixion, quartering, flagellation, torture by fire and other forms of martyrdom. This copy is complete with all the plates but has been bound without the 322 pages of the Latin text, the introductory sections (4 ff.) or the index (5 pages). COPY preserved in a contemporary binding, with the plates in GOOD CONDITION but with uneven printing, as is always the case with this work. ¶ Brunet, II-1468.
