Description
RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme). THE CORRUPTED PEASANT, OR THE DANGERS OF THE CITY. A RECENT STORY, BASED ON THE ACTUAL LETTERS OF THE CHARACTERS. The Hague – Paris, Veuve Duchesne et Valade, 1776. Four volumes bound in two in-12 volumes in fawn calfskin, smooth spine divided into compartments and decorated with fleurons and small gilt ironwork, title and volume number labels in garnet morocco, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges (contemporary binding). A small old paper label at the bottom of one spine; a small wormhole at the foot of each spine; light foxing. A COUNTERFEIT OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION published by the Toulouse bookseller Delaporte, probably in 1778, of this major epistolary novel by Rétif, which recounts the gradual corruption of a young provincial confronted with the temptations of city life. The collation of this copy corresponds exactly to that given by Rives Childs, except for Volume 2, where he erroneously gives 321 pages instead of 312. A CHARMING COPY preserved in its fresh contemporary binding. ¶ Rives Childs, Bibliographie de Restif de la Bretonne, XIV-7, p. 234.
