Ambrose Duval is mentioned in New Orleans in February 1803 and his name appears in several of the city’s directories from 1823 to 1835. In 1837 he practised in Charleston, and he is recorded as being in New Orleans in 1842, 1854 and 1856. Duval was one of Louisiana’s most prominent miniaturists thanks to his typically French, slightly primitive style (ref. Fulton 1968); his works are highly sought-after and rare on the market. Some of his works can be found at the Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport (Louisiana) and at the National Museum of American Art in Washington; his most famous miniature portrait is that of Claiborne, Governor of Louisiana.
