Description
BOULENGER (Jean). TREATISE ON THE SPHERE OF THE WORLD. Paris, Jean Jombert, 1688. 12mo, brown grained calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with a gilt scroll, gilt panels and fleurons, gilt title, gilt scroll on the edges, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding); 320 pp., 1 plate out of text. Tears and small losses to the upper cap, lower cap torn off with a small loss to the lower compartment, one corner blunt, a few faint marginal water stains. NEW CORRECTED AND EXPANDED EDITION, illustrated with a double-page folded plate, mounted on a tab, depicting an ARMILLARY SPHERE, and numerous wood-engraved figures within the text. This manual on astronomy and cosmography explains the circles of the sphere, the movements of the celestial bodies, eclipses and the principles of geography. The bookseller’s note announces the addition of notes and explanations concerning the systems of Copernicus and Tycho Brahe, as well as the updating of the illustrations; these additions are attributed to Jacques Ozanam. An old handwritten bookplate reading ‘A. Gautier-Sauzin’ on the title page, most likely referring to the Montalbanais author Antoine GAUTIER-SAUZIN (1748–1831), of particular interest for the history of education and the defence of the Occitan language, who was also a landowner and farmer in Montauban. On the first endpaper, a long handwritten inscription requesting the return of the volume in the event of its loss and mentioning a reward in the form of wine! A GOOD COPY, complete with the plate and preserved in its period binding, with the book block in fresh condition despite a few faint water-stains.
