[ATLAS]. LEVASSEUR (V.). ILLUSTRATED NATIONAL ATLAS of the 86 departments and French possessions, divided into arrondissements, cantons and communes, showing the routes of all roads, railways and canals. P., Combette, 1851. Folio in red buffalo leather, front cover decorated in the centre with a polychrome plaque (approx. 20 × 14 cm) within a frame of gilt fillet and gilt corner ferrules, spine with broad raised bands decorated with a cold-stamped scroll and gilded beaded bands, compartments adorned with gilded scrolls and fleurons, gilded title, red cloth slipcase with a red buffalo-skin spine featuring the same decoration as the binding (modern binding and slipcase). A light stain in the lower right-hand corner of the title page, foxing and some marginal soiling. ATLAS OF 103 PLATES with serpentine borders: illustrated title page, statistical table, ‘map of France in 1850’; and 100 illustrated MAPS, engraved on steel and enhanced with colour, including a double-page ‘New Map of France’. Copy preserved in a LUXURIOUS MODERN BINDING, accompanied by its slipcase. The front cover is adorned with a SUPERB METALLIC PLATE WITH SCALLOPED EDGES, POLYCHROME ENAMELLED, with a relief decoration, signed ‘M. Blanc’, probably Marc BLANC, a French enameller active during the 1970s and 1980s. The composition features, at the centre, two allegorical figures—one female and one male—with bare torsos, holding urns from which water flows; they are surmounted by a scene of land combat featuring artillery pieces and overlook a naval battle between sailing ships.
