CORNELIA Cornelius Lentulus Spinther 42 BC C. CASSI. IMP LEIBERTAS. Bust of Libertas wearing a diadem, veiled and draped. She is adorned with a pearl necklace. R/. LENTVLVS SPINT*. Jug and lituus. ♦ Cr 504; Syd 1304; BMC 73 Aureus struck in a travelling military mint, probably Smyrna. (8.11 g) Very rare. Large flan. Very good condition. This aureus was issued by P. Cornelius Lentulus Spinther and M. Servilius, who were joint legates of Cassius and Brutus. They issued coins in the name of their generals. *Lentulus Spinther was born in 74 BC. He received the ‘virile’ toga in 57 BC, and in the same year was elected to the College of Augurs. Following the assassination of Julius Caesar, he joined the factions of Cassius and Brutus and was probably killed at Philippi. The design on the reverse of this coin refers to Lentulus’s appointment to the College of Augurs.
