SPAIN – KINGDOM OF SPAIN (CHARLES III) – Set of 2 coins: 1/2 Escudo (Medio Escudo), 1772, Madrid. Obverse: Bust of Charles III facing right. – CAROL. III. D. G. HISP. R. Reverse: Crowned shield bearing the arms of Castile and León, flanked by the mint mark (a crowned ‘M’ for Madrid) on the left, and the initials of the assayers (P J for Pinto and Julio) on the right. Gross weight: 1.8 g each. Metal and fineness: 900 gold. References: Calicó 1256; Friedberg# 290. Condition: Very Good+ (for both specimens) Historical note: the date 1772 corresponds to a reform of Charles III’s coinage, characterised by a new portrait and an adjustment to the gold fineness.
