SWITZERLAND – REPUBLIC AND CANTON OF GENEVA – 10 centimes, 1839 – Geneva. Obverse: Coat of arms of Geneva within a circle: an imperial eagle on the left and the Key of St Peter on the right, surmounted by the sun bearing the monogram IHS. Peripheral legend: ‘POST · TENE-BRAS · LUX · ’, the Genevan motto meaning ‘After darkness, light’. Reverse: The denomination ‘10 CENTIMES’ centred above the year ‘1839’. Peripheral legend: ‘REP · ET CANT · DE GENEVE’. Edge: Smooth. Gross weight: 3.20 g. Metal and fineness: Billon, 150 silver. Diameter: 22 mm. Thickness: approx. 1.05 mm. Face value: 10 centimes. Orientation: Coin strike, 6 o’clock. Strike quality: Circulation coin. Condition: TTB+; well-preserved relief, silvery-grey patina and a few superficial marks. References: KM# 128; HMZ 2-366. Historical note: This coin belongs to the first series of the Geneva franc, used from 1839 until the adoption of the Swiss franc in 1850. The obverse features the coat of arms of Geneva and the motto ‘Post Tenebras Lux’.
