Description
SWITZERLAND – CANTON OF BASEL – 1 batzen, 1826 – Basel. Obverse: Shield bearing the coat of arms of Basel, surmounted by a stylised bishop’s crozier, surrounded by two branches. Peripheral inscription: ‘CANTON BASEL’. In the exergue: ‘1 · BATZ ·’. This specimen corresponds to the variant with a full stop after ‘BATZ’ and short branches. Reverse: A cross of concord separating the value markings. Peripheral legend: ‘CONCORD · CANTONE DER SCHWEIZ’. Date 1826 and value 1 Bz. Edge: Smooth. Gross weight: 2.60 g. Metal and fineness: Billon. Diameter: 24 mm. Face value: 1 batzen, equivalent to 1/10 of a Basel franc. Orientation: Coin edge, 6 o’clock. Strike quality: Circulation coin. Condition: SUP-; well-preserved relief, residual lustre, slight golden patina and fine superficial marks. References: KM# 208; HMZ 2# 111h, type 2 variant. Historical note: A cantonal issue predating the federal monetary unification of 1850. The batzen was then a subdivision of the franc in a system where the cantons retained their own coinage.
