Description
[MISS CAMPBELL - AJACCIO]
Architectural plan bearing the handwritten inscription: "Proposed English Church - Corsica - for Miss Campbell".
Architectural drawing in ink, wash and handwritten annotations on tracing paper.
34.5 x 25.5 cm.
Rare preparatory document most probably relating to the project for the Anglican church built in Ajaccio on the initiative of Miss Thomasina Campbell for the British wintering community settled in the "Quartier des étrangers" during the second half of the 19th century.
The drawing shows a foundation plan with detailed metric dimensions, layout of the load-bearing walls, interior layout and semi-circular apse. The whole bears witness to the work of an architect or engineer, enriched with technical notes from the building site and preparatory drawings.
A major figure in the development of Ajaccio as a tourist and social centre in the 19th century, the Scottish patron Miss Thomasina Campbell played an active role in the development of the residential area frequented by British winter visitors. In particular, she supported the creation of the Anglican Holy Trinity Church, built on the Cours Grandval between 1869 and 1878 to meet the religious needs of the English colony.
This document is a rare testimony to the British influence on Ajaccio's town planning and architecture at the end of the 19th century, as well as a valuable piece of information on the history of aristocratic tourism in Corsica.
