WRITTEN IN CORSICAN BY AN ARTILLERY OFFICER OF THE FRENCH EXPEDITIONARY ARMY (1768-1769).
Begun in Corte and completed in Bastia, this history provides a direct and structured account of the French expedition to Corsica. It opens with a general presentation of the island, enriched by a reminder of its ancient history, before giving a detailed account of the military operations. The author inserts numerous developments devoted to the inhabitants, for whom he shows real sympathy, giving the whole a dimension that is both historical and human.
FRANÇOIS-RENÉ-JEAN DE POMMEREUL (1745-1823), an artillery officer and future general, was one of young Napoleon Bonaparte's examiners at the Brienne military school. A colonel in 1785, he was in Naples during the Revolution. Thanks to Bonaparte's support, he was removed from the list of emigrants in 1796 and reintegrated into the army, where he went on to enjoy a brilliant career as a major general, prefect, councillor of state and then director general of the Librairie. Outlawed by Louis XVIII, he went into exile from 1815 to 1819. A prolific writer, he published several works of his own as well as various translations from Italian.
