Description
[CORSICA - REPUBLIC OF GENOA] Important administrative manuscript relating to the government of Corsica under Genoese rule. Certified copy drawn up in Bonifacio in 1854 from royal archives kept in Turin. Manuscript in-4 on paper, stapled, written in brown ink in Italian and partially in French, calligraphic titles, marginal annotations. Beautiful, highly legible Italian cursive script, with elegant calligraphic titles. Important collection containing a copy of the "Concessioni graziose fatte dalla Serenissima Repubblica di Genova ai popoli e sudditi del Regno di Corsica". These texts, promulgated in 1733 by the Republic of Genoa at the time of the major Corsican uprisings, set out the political, judicial, fiscal and military measures intended to re-establish Genoese authority on the island. The manuscript deals in particular with : - the amnesty granted to the insurgents ; - the creation and recognition of a Corsican nobility; - judicial and administrative organisation; - public offices and the role of the "Oratore del Regno"; - tax reforms ; - the regulation of weapons; - measures against homicide and vendetta ; - the administration of strongholds and ports. The collection as a whole is of major interest for the institutional and political history of Corsica in the 18th century. The last page contains several particularly interesting certification references: "Certified as conforming to the printed original [...] in the Royal Court Archives - Turin, 27 September 1843". as well as a second note: "For a true copy. Bonifacio 11 March 1854". These annotations show that the present manuscript is derived from an official copy made from a copy kept in the Royal Archives in Turin. It is a document of great historical interest, bearing witness both to the administrative memory of Genoese institutions in Corsica ; and the preservation of these texts by the authorities in the 19th century. Some foxing and traces of use, good overall condition.
